United States Visiting Visas |
What is this US B-1/B-2 Visas?
Like I said earlier, these are types of visas a non-citizen of the United States longing to travel to the country will need to obtain.
Simply put, these visas are non-immigrant visas for individuals who want to enter the United States temporarily for business (B-1 visa), for tourism (B-2 visa), or for a combination of both purposes (B-1/B-2 visa).
For US immigrant visas that can guarantee your permanent residency, kindly see family-based visas and employment-based visa options.
B-1 Business Visitor Visa
The US B-1 visa will allow you to enter America for specific business purposes without the ability to seek employment or receive income from U.S. sources.
Some of the activities you will be able to perform include:
- Attending conferences, meetings, or conventions
- Negotiating contracts
- Consulting with business associates
- Settling estates
- Participating in short-term training
B-1 Visa Eligibility Requirements
For you to be able to apply for a B-1 visa and qualify, there a few tangible things you must possess.
- Demonstrate legitimate business purpose for the visit
- Have sufficient funds to cover all your expenses
- You must have residence and strong ties to your home country
- You must as well have the intention to return back to your home country upon visa expiration
B-1 Visa Application Process
- You are required to complete the online non-immigrant visa application (Form DS-160)
- You will have to print the application form confirmation page while filling the above form. Please, be aware that this printout is what you will take along to your interview.
- Also note that you will required to upload your photograph while completing the online Form DS-160. Your photo must meet the Photograph Requirements.
- You will need to pay the required visa application fee of $185 (as of June 2024, please confirm the all visa fees it might change sooner or later)
- Next, you will schedule an interview appointment at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate
- Also, you will be required to provide supporting documentation, such as:

- Proof of residence and ties to home country (e.g., property ownership, employment contract)
Mind you, visa interviews may not be required if you're 13 years old or younger and 80 years old above.
I will also say that, apply for your visa as early as possible, because, interview schedule appointments may vary.
B-1 Visa Duration and Extensions
Understand this, B-1 visas are typically valid for a period of one year, although shorter or longer durations may be granted based on the specific circumstances.
So, extensions may be possible if the business activity requires a longer stay.
Moving forward...
B-2 Tourist/Vacation Visa
The B-2 visa is the second type of US visa that allows foreigners to visit the U.S. temporarily for tourism, vacation, or recreational purposes.
Securing a B-2 visa allows you to:
- Engage in sightseeing and visiting tourist attractions
- Visiting friends and relatives
- Seeking medical treatment
- Participating in events or contests (unpaid)
B-2 Visa Eligibility Requirements
Just as the the B-1 Business visa, you as an applicant for a B-2 visa must demonstrate:
- A legitimate purpose for your visit (e.g., tourism, medical treatment)
- Proof you possess adequate funds to cover all your expenses
- Must be a residence and strong ties to their home country, and
- Show intention to depart the U.S. upon visa expiration
I think that's clear enough.
So, how do you apply for the B-2 visa?
B-2 Visa Application Process
The application process for a B-2 visa is similar to that of the B-1 visa I explained above, including:
- Completing the online non-immigrant visa application (Form DS-160)
- Paying the required visa application fee of $185
- Scheduling an interview appointment
- Providing supporting documentation, such as:
- Passport
- Proof of purpose for the visit (e.g., travel itinerary, medical records)
- Evidence of financial ability
- Proof of residence and ties to home country
B-2 Visa Duration and Extensions
These B-2 visas are typically valid for up to six months, but shorter or longer durations may be granted based on the specific circumstances.
In the event that you need to extend your stay due a reason or the other, extensions may be possible if the purpose of the visit requires a longer stay. But it is not guaranteed.
